ETERNAL YOUTH?

Is there a link between stem cells and cancer genesis?. How close is that relationship? What is the evidence? Is it possible to manipulate stem cells in order to prevent, stop or cure cancer?. Some evidence suggests that yes. A stem cell is capable to forge a human being by means of a process called differentiation as long as different chained signals work properly. However the same stem cell (with potential to forge humans), could under certain circumstances, remain eternally young, in an undifferentiated state or acquire characteristics of cancer dwelling and destroying the human body. In a new study, professors : Qi-Long Ying (University/Southern California), Austin Smith (Cambridge University) and Jason Wray (Wellcome Trust Centre/Stem Cell Research), eliminated the factors that induce the differentiation of embryonic mice (inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase 3 and blocking the activation of molecules ERK1/ERK2 through another : FGF4, keeping in undifferentiated embryonic state, without cancer to a lot of stem cells. The study suggests that stem cells need certain environmental signals to keep young and undifferentiated, opening the possibility that certain patients can be treated with their own cells (obtained from their skin or other).

JUVENTUD ETERNA?
