DINO COLOURS

A flagstone of blended slime with volcanic ash (125 million years), containing the fossilized skeleton of the small dinosaur Sinosauropteryx, discovered in the site of Jehol/China, has allowed to discover the colors of the feathers of these and perhaps their function (ornamental-insulation-flying). Michael Benton (University of Bristol-UK) and Zhonghe Zhou (Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology-Beijing), leaders of the work identified 2 melanosomes types to the interior of the fossil feathers: sausage type organellas (eumelanosomes), producers of black color generating rings of white and black color along the tail and other spherical (phaeomelanosomes), producers of orange color giving the crest a mohican-style. The proteins of the other colors would have degraded, without leaving traces. As the feathers are not modern a discreet controversy exists regarding the identity of the feathers.

Una losa de piedra de legamo mezclada con ceniza volcánica (125 millones de años), conteniendo el esqueleto fosilizado del pequeño dinosaurio Sinosauropteryx prima, descubierta en el sitio de Jehol/China, ha permitido descubrir los colores de las plumas de estos y tal vez su función (ornamental-impedir perdida de calor-volar). Michael Benton (Universidad de Bristol-UK) y Zhonghe Zhou (Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology-Beijing), lideres del trabajo identificaron 2 tipos de melanosomas al interior de las plumas fosiles : organelas en foma de salchicha (eumelanosomes), productoras de color negro generando anillos de color blanco y negro a lo largo de la cola y otras esfericas (phaeomelanosomes), productoras de color anaranjado dando a la cabeza la forma de un peinado cherokee. Las proteinas de los otros colores se habrían degradado, sin dejar trazas. Como las plumas no son modernas existe una discreta controversia respecto a la identidad de las plumas.
