CHEVRON AND ECUADORIAN POLLUTION

David defeated the multinational oil giant Chevron that between 1972-1982 pollute with billions of gallons of crude oil, Ecuadorian Amazonian rivers and villages possibly killing 1400 people and causing immense damage to animals and plants (Amazonian Chernobyl) The provincial court justice of Sucumbios (Ecuador), issued on February 14, 2011 a court ruling forcing Chevron (that merged with Texaco in 2001), to pay 8.646 million dollars to various communities (30 000 persons), contaminated with crude oil near Lago Agrio/Ecuador. A group of Ecuadorian scientists showed in 1998 in water and leaves pollution signs up to 50% in the samples. Some multinationals are taking advantage of the poor standards of environmental protection, dealing with corrupt governments to reduce costs. Chevron has not yet accepted the verdict and refuses to pay the sum. Chevron's lawyers try to bring the trial to international courts, arguing that the Ecuadorian judicial system is corrupt. For its part the indigenous communities also will appeal the veredict to consider the amount to pay insufficient.
