ARTIFICIAL LEAF

At MIT some researchers continue perfecting a device capable of producing electricity in remote areas. Joep Pijpers et al, have created a device that emulates artificial photosynthesis using sunlight to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, storing hydrogen for future energy needs. The device combines the strength of cobalt-phosphate catalysts with silicon solar cells achieving efficient and cheap artificial photosynthesis. Silicon collect light and convert it in electric current like that naturally made by photosynthetic membranes. Using silicon as a semiconductor is improved the efficiency and facilities to build the device. Cobalt catalyst mimics the oxygen-evolving complex of a leaf, where water splitting occurs.. Cobalt catalyst were deposited on crystalline silicon cells covered with thin protective layers of indium tin oxide at room temperature and neutral pH.

HOJA ARTIFICIAL
