FORMATION OF INSECT WINGS

The expertise of two German scientists has permitted that fossils insect found in northeastern Brazil (Cretaceous), resembling small mantis and dragonflies (120 million years old), provide a closer look on how the wings were formed in certain groups of insects. After examining fossil larvae and adult forms, scientists from Natural History Museum in Stuttgart (Günter Bechly and Arnold Staniczek), described in the Journal: "Insect Systematics & Evolution", the characteristics of Chimärenflügler (Coxoplectoptera fossil), adult insects mixed with different insects. Fossilized larvae of 10-32 mm long, covered with limestone carry front legs and jaws that reveal a predatory lifestyle. Also, short, strong and fat middle and posterior legs and laterally flattened body signaling a typical animal that walks daily through furrows. As the gills and insect wings have the same evolutionary origin, the researchers found that larvae carried wings plates on the back, these being initially rigid outgrowths. Today the plates of the wings are located on the left and right respectively.
