CONSEQUENCES OF BLAST BOMBS

Now that are appearing more and more cases -near epidemic- of chronic brain injuries in ex-combatants of Iraq and Afghanistan wars, scientific research has discovered a second neurological syndrome associated with blasts bombs that spreading as shock waves by the whole body caused brain chronic damage in combatant militaries and in bomb specialists working at 50 m away from the blast. The syndrome known as TBI (traumatic brain injury) is characterized cognitively by sleep problems, headache, tinnitus, nausea, forgetfulness, etc. Until recently, TBIs were confused with classic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Fortunately, the Pentagon, The Gray Team (Walter Reed Hospital/Bethesda, Maryland), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Office of Naval Research, support research to this respect.

TBI, may be affecting more than 320 000 american ex-combatants. In the meantime M.A. Hemphill et al, published an article: M. A. Hemphill et al. PLoS ONE 6, e22899, 2011, in which he argues that blast bombs alters the in chain functioning cellular reactions destroying integrin signals, blocking interneuronal connections, which impair every day people function, with subsequent risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases: Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. Blood tests have been developed to diagnose silent TBI showing elevated C-terminal ubiquitin hydrolase, UCH-L1 and glial fibrillary acidic protein: GFAP. For its part, the forensic pathologist Bennet Omalu identified in histological sections of football players abnormal accumulations of tau protein associated with Alzheimer's and other dementias (BI Omalu et al. Neurosurgery 57, 128-134, 2005).
